This image depicts the front view of the dome of the Pantheon in Paris, set against a dark, cloudy sky. The focus of the image is on the impressive dome, designed to rival those of St. Peter's Basilica in Rome and St. Paul's Cathedral in London. The dome, constructed entirely of stone, is actually composed of three domes nested within each other. It stands at 83.0 meters (272 ft) high, in contrast to St. Peter's Basilica, the tallest dome in the world at 136.57 meters (448.1 ft). The dome is capped by a cross, adding to its majestic appearance. The Pantheon is a monument located in the 5th arrondissement of Paris, France, standing in the Latin Quarter atop the Montagne Sainte-Geneviève, at the center of the Place du Panthéon. Built between 1758 and 1790, the Pantheon was designed by Jacques-Germain Soufflot at the behest of King Louis XV, who intended it as a church dedicated to Saint Genevieve, the patron saint of Paris. The church was meant to house her relics. However, neither Soufflot nor Louis XV lived to see the church's completion.
