Impost Byzantine Capital From Beyazit Church 6th Century

Impost Byzantine Capital From Beyazit Church 6th Century

The image showcases a Corinthian column capital, a classical architectural element, isolated against a stark black background. The capital is carved from a light-colored stone, likely marble or a similar material, displaying a weathered, aged appearance. The 6th century impost headpiece found in Beyazit excavations in Turkey. Ruins of Beyazit Churches were located west of the Forum of Theodosius. Theirs ruins are currently located under some of the buildings of the Istanbul University. The capital's design is highly ornate. The upper portion features a decorative frieze of interconnected floral or foliate motifs, creating a delicate, openwork pattern. Below this, there is a prominent layer of stylized acanthus leaves, characteristic of Corinthian capitals. These leaves are deeply carved and detailed, with intricate veins and a sense of three-dimensionality. The leaves curl outwards and downwards, framing a central, more recessed area. At the sides, the capital features prominent volutes, or scroll-like ornaments, typical of the Corinthian style.
