The view from The Square of the Winds in the capital of Dougga offers a glimpse into the rich history and architectural splendor of the ancient city. The urban settlement at Dougga traces its origins back to the sixth century BCE, with the original Numidian name of the city, TBGG, possibly referring to the elevated plateau on which it was built. Throughout its history, Dougga experienced various dominations, likely coming under Carthaginian control by the end of the fourth century BCE. It became part of the kingdom of Numidia and was later annexed to the province of Africa, known as Africa Nova, by Julius Caesar after the African War of 46 BCE. The settlement of Dougga was included in the reorganization of Africa as a senatorial province, with the Legio III Augusta stationed there. As the capital of the province of Africa Proconsularis, Dougga held significant political and administrative importance. The governor's seat resided in Carthage, another renowned city of the region. Within Dougga, the Capitolium, the focal point of the image, stood as a magnificent temple dedicated to the Capitoline Triad, comprising Jupiter Optimus Maximus, Juno Regina, and Minerva Augusta. In addition, the temple held a secondary dedication to Marcus Aurelius and Lucius Verus, wishing for their good health and well-being. The Square of the Winds, from where the view is taken, offers a vantage point to appreciate the surrounding architectural marvels and the grandeur of the Capitolium. It invites contemplation of the historical significance and religious devotion that permeated ancient Dougga.
