Head Statue Of Emperor Gordian I

Head Statue Of Emperor Gordian I

This image presents the head statue of Emperor Marcus Antonius Gordian I, who reigned for a brief period during the tumultuous events of 238, known as the Year of the Six Emperors. He served as Roman emperor for only 22 days. During this time, a senatorial revolt led to the successive proclamations of Gordian I, Gordian II, Pupienus, Balbinus, and Gordian III as emperors in opposition to Maximinus Thrax. Gordian I's reign was marked by political instability, and he was ultimately defeated by forces loyal to Maximinus Thrax. Following his defeat and the death of his son, Gordian II, Gordian I chose to commit suicide. The head statue, isolated against a black background, offers viewers a glimpse into the artistic representation of this historical figure. The statue serves as a reminder of the complex and volatile political landscape of the Roman Empire during this period, as well as the enduring legacy of these events in the pages of history.
